about
A love song for a person I've never met. Inspired by a lovely article by Shannon Keating, nominally about her experiences on an Olivia cruise, interlarded with queer cultural analysis, but at heart a romance between her and a person she meets on the boat.
Lynette calls herself "a big strong butch." Seemed like the perfect subject for a simple doo wop song, but the longer I grappled with the question of what makes someone butch, the less of an answer I had. Is it body language? Attitude? Attire? Acquiring masculine stuff?
No answer felt authentic enough. So this is not a song about big strong butches. It's just a song about someone's Lynette.
Let's stay up late and talk about our hobbies
Do you like boxing? Would you prefer dance?
You never make me feel bad about my body, do you?
I keep your secrets in the pocket watch you bought me
You take your time, you say, "I know what I want"
You never make me feel bad about my body, do you?
Could we go on this way, baby?
We've sailed a thousand miles
Let's just pretend a while
Could we go on this way, baby?
A flight of fantasy
Don't tell me that this is temporary
You hold my head when I'm feeling melancholy
You move your hands and I forget where I'm from
You never make me feel bad about my body, do you?
Just take me out for a ride in your Ferrari
Let's fall asleep in the back of your car
You never make me feel bad about my body, do you?
